The Cartoon Museum

Brand Identity + Merchandise
2024
During my semester abroad at the University of the Arts London, we were tasked with expanding upon the current real world branding of The Cartoon Museum in London and creating a unique cohesive visual identity to be applied to merchandise in their gift shop and possibly the physical space of the museum.

The Cartoon Museum is a London based museum for British cartoons, caricatures and comic strips, primarily focusing on print and political cartoons (not animation).

My group’s design system was chosen as one of two winners by The Cartoon Museum, and is expected to be featured in items in the gift shop of The Cartoon Museum starting this November.

Current Brand Presence

With this brand expansion, The Cartoon Museum was looking to create a unified design system that would encourage visitors to enjoy the art of cartooning and to motivate everyone to pick up a pencil and draw.

The Museum was in a strange transition period between many different logos, but all included this icon of a character popping through a building with pillars.

To understand the space of the museum better, our class was taken on a tour. Here are some pictures of the museum after a recent remodel.

Pattern Development

Utilizing original shapes found in the current Cartoon Museum icon, I developed this pattern reminiscent of doodles, meant to promote a fun and playful atmosphere for anyone visiting The Cartoon Museum.

The colors were a requirement provided by the museum based on their recent interior remodel and brand refresh.

The goal of the pattern is that it can be applied to any merchandise or space and immediately translate the quirky/fun attitude of The Cartoon Museum.
